Discovering the Passion for Civil Engineering

Felix Ayodele Israel Adjayi, P.E. , P.Eng, P. Ing.

Q: What first inspired you to pursue civil engineering?

A:
From a very young age, I realized how much a country’s development depends on infrastructure — roads, bridges, and buildings. Growing up, I became more aware of how these structures impact communities and economic growth. That curiosity gradually turned into a passion. Since I was already strong in science and mathematics, civil engineering felt like the perfect career path for me.

Q: Did your educational background influence your decision?

A:
Absolutely! In the Togolese educational system, students interested in engineering can already follow a scientific track in high school with advanced mathematics and physics courses. Before even entering university, I had already studied subjects such as differential calculus, physics, kinematics and statics. Those foundations helped shape my confidence in pursuing engineering.

Q: What was your academic journey like before entering engineering?

A:
After high school, I first studied mathematics and physics as preparation for engineering school. Later, after arriving in Chicago, I became involved in university programs and student organizations, which further exposed me to the engineering environment and professional development opportunities.

Q: What advice would you give students who are still exploring engineering careers?

A:
Pay attention to the things that naturally interest you. If you enjoy problem-solving, science, infrastructure or understanding how cities function, civil engineering could be an excellent fit. Also, build strong foundations in math and physics early because they become essential later in your studies and career.
